From gumboots to giggles: Hazel’s super sales skills

At St Augustine’s Anglican Church Op Shop, every item has a story – and volunteer Hazel has a knack for telling it. So when she spotted a customer eyeing a battered pair of old gumboots, she wasn’t about to let them walk out the door unsold.

The man frowned: “They look worn,” the man said.

Hazel beamed: “Exactly! Pre-worn means pre-tested. They’ve survived storms, mud, maybe even the Nambour Show. Heritage boots, my friend.”

After much persuasion, the customer sighed. “Alright, I’ll take them. You’ve done a great job.”

He stopped mid-sentence, staring at the boots.

“I like them,” he said slowly,” but ... do I have to take the toad?”

Just then, a big, fat, slimy brown Queensland cane toad jumped out of a boot and hopped out of the shop.

Hazel clapped her hands. “Complimentary mascot - limited-time offer.”
