Montville’s historic St Mary’s to celebrate 111 years
Patronal festival marks a milestone of village faith
St Mary’s Anglican Church in Montville will celebrate its patronal festival on Sunday 10 August at 9am, marking 111 years as a spiritual and community cornerstone in the village.
Established in 1914 and built from local timbers for no more than £400, St Mary’s has withstood cyclones, community debate, and the passage of time. The guest speaker for this year’s festival service will be the Venerable Dr Lucy Morris Archdeacon of the Sunshine Coast. Reverend Morris is the priest of the Anglican Parish of Buderim.
“I’ve been invited to be the guest speaker, which I am very excited about and delighted. A real privilege to speak at such a special celebration,” Reverend Morris said.
St Mary’s has always been more than just a church – it’s a place of memory, reflection and connection.
From hosting seven weddings in one weekend to surviving a proposal to demolish it in 1983, the timber church has stood firm with the support of its parishioners and the wider community.
Weekly services continue every Sunday at 8am, and the church remains open daily for quiet reflection. The adjacent memorial garden features plaques commemorating many former residents and parishioners.
All are welcome to attend the patronal festival on August 10. Read the full article online at www.sunshinevalleygazette.com.au. With thanks to the Montville Village Association.
