Award-winning Brisbane saxophonist Andrew Butt, pictured, will bring his distinctive sound to Nambour this month when his acclaimed jazz trio performs at The Presynct on Thursday, November 19.
Described by ABC Jazz as a stalwart of the Australian music scene, Andrew has performed alongside some of the country’s leading entertainers, including James Morrison, Emma Pask, Tom Burlinson, Rhonda Burchmore and David Campbell.
His career has also taken him around the world, with performances throughout Australia, Indonesia, New Zealand, China, Europe and the USA.
Andrew draws much of his inspiration from legendary saxophonist Paul Desmond, best known for his work with the Dave Brubeck Quartet and for composing the jazz classic Take Five.
When asked about his distinctive light sound, Desmond famously remarked: “I had it in the back of my mind that I wanted to sound like a dry martini.”
That influence can be heard in Andrew’s melodic improvisations and original compositions, which often evoke a sense of longing and beauty.
His latest album, Peregian, features music inspired by everyday experiences, friendships, travels and love.
The title track was inspired by a visit to Peregian Beach, while another composition, Le Baiser Salé, inspired by a performance at a Paris jazz club, won the jazz category at the 2024 Queensland Music Awards.
Andrew’s trio has performed at major festivals and venues, including the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz, Brisbane International Jazz Festival and jazz clubs across Europe.
For the Nambour performance, Andrew will be joined by two accomplished Queensland musicians, Kellee Green on piano and Helen Russell on bass.
The trio will perform selections from Peregian alongside favourite jazz standards in the intimate setting of The Presynct.
The Jazz Sessions performance begins at 6.30pm, with doors opening at 6pm.
Tickets are $25–$50 through oztix.com.au or at the door, although bookings are recommended.
