Nambour Crushers Rugby League Club is mourning the loss of Bert Deschamps, pictured, a Life Member of the Crushers and Souths, and a club president, patron, manager, coach and mentor. Described by the club as “a true gentleman” and “an absolute giant” of the Nambour rugby league community, he was a cornerstone in the foundation, growth and shaping of the club.
Across generations, Mr Deschamps devoted countless hours to the game he loved and, more importantly, to the hundreds of young boys and girls who were fortunate enough to have him as a coach, mentor and guiding influence.
His legacy extends well beyond the football field. He didn’t just coach footballers; he helped shape young people, teaching respect, commitment, teamwork and looking after one another. Those values, the club says, will live on through generations of Crushers players and families.
He gave so much of himself to the club and community, never seeking recognition or reward, simply wanting to make a difference.
“There are people who contribute to a football club, and then there are people who help build its very foundations,” the club said in a tribute. “Bert Deschamps was one of those rare people whose influence helped make the Nambour Crushers the club we know and love today.”
On behalf of the Crushers family, past and present, the club extended its deepest condolences to Mr Deschamps’ family, friends and the many people whose lives he touched.
“Thank you, Bert, for everything you gave to our club, our kids and our community. Forever a Crusher.”
