Woombye lantern parade to light up town

One of Woombye’s much-loved Christmas traditions will return in December, bringing lanterns, carols and community spirit to the heart of the town.

The Woombye Nativity and Lantern Parade will be held on Thursday, December 3, beginning at 5.30pm at St Margaret’s Church in Blackall Street.

“The evening will start with a nativity play and performances by local choirs before families join a lantern procession through Woombye,” said organiser Nicola Canty.

Celebrations will continue at Community Bank Woombye with cake, Christmas carols and the lighting of the town Christmas tree.

The lantern parade began in 2009 as part of Woombye Community’s five-day Christmas celebrations and has since grown into a treasured annual tradition.

“Children dressed in nativity costumes, handmade lanterns and families singing together have become familiar sights during the event,” said Nicola.

Residents can make their own lanterns ahead of the parade at a lantern-making workshop on Saturday, November 21, from 8am to 11am at Woombye Childcare Nature Kindergarten, 29 Blackall Street.

“Children, grandchildren, friends and families are welcome to take part.”

Local businesses and residents are also being encouraged to decorate shopfronts and homes to help light up the town for Christmas.

The event is being organised by Woombye Childcare Nature Kindergarten, St Margaret’s Church, Community Bank Woombye (Bendigo Bank), the Woombye Community & Business Association and the Salvation Army, supported by local choirs and volunteers.

Organisers are encouraging families and friends from across the community to come together and help Woombye shine for Christmas.
