Seven grand finals, five doubles: Woombye Snakes’ golden football season
Twelve teams in the finals. Nine in grand finals. Seven premierships. Woombye Snakes Football Club has just delivered the best season in its 59-year history, and club president David Gaskin says the results tell only half the story.
Of the club’s 16 teams, 12 made the finals, nine progressed to grand finals, and seven claimed grand final victories – with five of those seven also securing minor premierships.
But beyond the trophy cabinet Gaskin said the results reflected a welcoming and supportive culture the club had built. “I think the secret to our success is our people,” he said. “We’re a 100 per cent volunteer-run club, and we have an incredible group of coaches, managers, committee members, parents and volunteers who are willing to put in the time and effort to make the club better.
“We’ve also worked hard to create a culture where people feel welcome and supported, from our youngest MiniRoos players right through to our senior teams. We want our players to enjoy their football, develop their skills and be proud to play for Woombye Snakes.”
The club’s grand final winners for 2026 were:
• Under 12/13 Girls – Premiers and Grand Final winners
• Youth Boys – Premiers and Grand Final winners
• Division 3 Men – Grand Final winners
• Division 2 Women – Premiers and Grand Final winners
• Division 2 Men – Premiers and Grand Final winners
• Under 23 Men – Grand Final winners
• FQPL 3 Women – Premiers and Grand Final winners
The Under 15 Division 1 and Youth Girls sides finished as grand final runners-up, while the Under 14s, Under 23 Women and FQPL 3 Men all reached the finals series.
David said the spread of success across every age group, from juniors through to seniors, spoke to the depth now running through the club. “Having 12 teams in finals and five teams winning the double is unheard of,” he said. “What makes me particularly proud is seeing that success from our junior teams right through to our senior sides, and especially the growth of our girls’ and women’s football.
“We’re seeing more girls getting involved, developing as players and progressing through the club, which is really exciting for the future. It shows that we’re developing players, coaches and teams at every level, and that the future of Woombye Snakes is very strong.”
Asked to single out one highlight from the season, David said it was almost an impossible task. “It’s very difficult to pick just one because there were so many great performances,” he said. “I was particularly proud of our Under 12/13 Girls, who went through the season undefeated and won the double. The Youth Boys Division 1 also won the premiership and successfully defended their title, winning the 2025 and 2026 grand finals.
“I am also so very proud of our FQPL 3 Women, who won their premiership and backed up last year’s grand final loss with a win this year. It’s only the third time the ladies have won the title.
“But for me, the results are only part of the story. Watching our players, coaches and families support each other throughout the finals series was probably the biggest highlight. That’s what Woombye Snakes is all about.”
David said the season’s success was a credit to everyone involved with the club. “I’d like to congratulate every player, coach, manager, volunteer and parent who has contributed to what has been a fantastic season for the club,” he said. “We’re a 100 per cent volunteer-run community club, so none of this happens without a huge amount of work behind the scenes.
“Seven grand final wins is something we can certainly celebrate, but I’m equally proud of the environment we’re creating at Woombye Snakes. We want to be a club where families feel welcome, players enjoy their football and everyone has the opportunity to develop and be part of a team. The success this season is a credit to everyone involved, and we’re already looking forward to building on it in 2027.”
