Chevallum's 'Karate Kid' returns from World Titles with two podium finishes

Chevallum State School student Autumn Rowe, 12, has returned from the GKR World Championships in the UK with two podium finishes, capping off a remarkable rise since taking up the sport just 26 months ago.

Autumn competed in the 10-11 Year Female category for students at the 4th-5th Kyu grading level karate. Autumn is currently 4th Kyu - Red Belt and only three KYU down from her first Shodan Black Belt.

In the kumite (sparring) event, Autumn narrowly missed out on the world title, going down in a sudden-death decider after finishing level with her opponent. The bout was decided on a "World Champion point" – a first to score wins – with Autumn finishing runner-up on a final score of 2.5 points to 2.

She also claimed bronze in the kata event, which involves performing a set sequence of karate movements and stances, judged on technique, precision and presentation.

Autumn's mother, Claire Woolridge, said it capped off a huge year for her daughter. "Overall a massively successful year for this kid, she now is looking to retain her current Double State Champion Title in the next age division of 12-13YR OLDS taking place in Brisbane in two weeks time, " Ms Woolridge said. “No rest for the best!”

As reported by the Gazette in June, Autumn's karate journey began 26 months ago after a Sunday afternoon spent watching the original Karate Kid movie. Since then she has progressed through six belt gradings, become the reigning Double Queensland State Champion in her division and represents the Queensland State Squad and now, Team Australia.

Ms Woolridge said the community's support had been instrumental in getting Autumn to the World Championships, with local businesses donating prizes for a fundraising raffle and Chevallum State School honoring her with an Elite Athlete Support donation to help with travel costs.

Autumn said “I wouldn't have had my success without the expert coaching and support delivered by my Sensei - Alex Plummer, Regional Manager for 34 GKR Karate Sunshine Coast. With a special mention for her State Team Coaches, Sensei Christopher Drummond and Sensei Lou Luxton.”
