Pretty but harmful: Bushcare crews battle weed spread
Bushcare News with Norm Morwood
Who hasn’t noticed the prolific very pretty crops of Easter Cassia (Senna pendula) on the verges of roads around Nambour? A beautiful yellow flowering exotic shrub from South America that flowers in Autumn (and other times occasionally) and spreads like wildfire. Sadly it is one of the worst of the many exotic weeds that infest our native bush and take over the land from the native plants that support the local native animals. We spend time removing this weed (and others) from our BushCare sites so the native plants can thrive. It would be great if everyone could remove these plants under their control (easy to recognise now when flowering). Or if you can’t bear to be without the flowers, at least remove the seed pods before the seeds are spread around.
If you’d like to join us in our habitat improving BushCare activities like weed control and planting local native replacements, the next opportunities at our sites are:-
• Florabunda Pocket in Woombye, Saturday 02 May Starting at 8am. Meet near the back Rugby oval in Victory Park, Woombye. Come down Laidlaw Rd and turn right through the large wire mesh gates just before the Gymnastics Hall and follow that road till you see us.
• Namba Creek on Saturday 16 May starting at 8am. Access is through the main gate of the Model Rail Park off Florence St Nambour.
To join in the action, you’ll need to come in “long everything” bush protective clothing including boots/shoes and a hat. All tools required will be provided. Let us know you’re planning to come by email to Norm or just turn up on the day.
