Nambour charity appeals for help amid lease uncertainty

Local charity Golf Programs Australia Incorporated (GPAI) has asked for community support as it works through an unexpected legal process affecting its long-standing retail and training space in Nambour.
The charity has operated from the site since December 2016, delivering retail, business and creative training opportunities for athletes living with an intellectual disability. GPAI says recent developments following a change in building ownership have created uncertainty around its ongoing use of the space, despite having time remaining on its current lease.
President Darrell Dalton said the organisation was now required to seek legal advice to clarify its position and protect its ability to continue operating from the site in the short term. “This has come with unplanned costs at a time when our focus is usually on programs, training and supporting our athletes,” he said.
To help meet these expenses, a GoFundMe campaign has been established by local supporter Julie Smedley.
Mr Dalton said early donations had already enabled GPAI to engage legal counsel and respond to initial correspondence. “We’re very grateful for the support received so far,” he said. “Those contributions have made a practical difference.”
Despite the uncertainty, GPAI has resumed operations, with the Nambour store reopening on January 6. Its golf program will also continue as scheduled at Glenview Par 3, starting January 13, with athletes, carers, volunteers and families expected to return for the new year.
The charity is also moving ahead with a previously planned Mega Art Clearance at the Old Ambulance Station from January 14 to 17.
The event will showcase and sell artwork created over the past nine years, with proceeds supporting GPAI’s programs during a challenging period. An evening event is planned for January 15, with the Old Ambo Bar open and EFTPOS available.
Mr Dalton said 2025 had been a demanding but ultimately positive year for the charity, highlighted by the successful Holey Moley Pro Am and confirmation that another charity Pro Am will be held in 2026.
“We remain focused on our purpose and the people we support,” he said.
“The backing of the local community continues to be incredibly important as we navigate the months ahead.”
