Witnesses sought over Palmwoods school abuse claims from 2000s

Rebecca Thomas, Special Counsel, Shine Lawyers.

Lawyers are seeking information from former students and staff from Palmwoods State School as part of an investigation into allegations of historical child abuse.

Shine Lawyers said it was investigating claims alleged to have taken place at the school in the early 2000s.

The firm has issued a witness callout asking anyone who was a student or staff member at the school around 2001 or 2002 to contact Special Counsel Rebecca Thomas confidentially.

“Shine Lawyers is investigating allegations of historical child sexual abuse said to have occurred at Palmwoods State School in the early 2000s,” said Ms Thomas. “Given the sensitive nature of this matter, we are unable to comment on specific allegations, however we are seeking information from anyone who may be able to assist with our enquiries.

“We are asking former students and staff members who were connected to Palmwoods State School during 2001 and 2002 to come forward if they have information that may be relevant to our investigation.

“Witness appeals such as this can play an important role in helping us build a clearer understanding of past events. Information from people who were present at the time can help confirm existing accounts or provide details that have not previously come to light. Even information that may appear insignificant, such as yearbooks, newsletters, the culture of the school, daily practices, or how concerns were handled, can be valuable.”

“Accounts from former students, staff members and other witnesses can be instrumental in helping us understand what may have occurred. We are grateful to those members of the community who have already come forward and shared information with us.

“Anyone who contacts Shine Lawyers will be treated with sensitivity, respect and confidentiality. We recognise that speaking about past experiences can be difficult, and there is no obligation whatsoever to pursue legal action. Contacting us is simply an opportunity to provide information that may assist our investigation.”

The callout does not identify any person accused of wrongdoing and no findings have been made.

Anyone with information can contact Rebecca Thomas on 07 5475 3520 or rethomas@shine.com.au. Anyone in crisis can contact Lifeline on 13 11 14.
