Lachlan Turns 4!

By Natalie Brown

The Page family, of Maleny, has much to celebrate this month, as young Lachlan, a sufferer of Edwards Syndrome (Trisomy 18) since birth, has defied medical odds, to live to age 4.

Lachlan, who shares his birthday with his older sister, celebrated his birthday with family, and received some good news from The Bordman Organisation – the donation of a new piece of equipment, a walker that will help him to have more mobility.Lachlan’s father, Rick says they discovered that Lachlan had Trisomy 18 after he had a heart attack - a week after he was born. His doctors told the family that it was unlikely Lachlan would live past one week, and they prepared for the worst, but their brave little boy has a strong will to live. “It was hard at the time, and we knew we were in for a bit of a hard run after his heart turn, but to be told that he wasn’t going to be around at all was a bit rough,” says Rick. “You just don’t know, we could wake up tomorrow morning and Lachlan might not be here.”The family has dedicated the last four years to spending as much time as possible with their beautiful boy, taking turns caring for their son while managing their family business – Rachel Leigh Optometrist, in Maleny. They are grateful to the Goodstart Early Learning Centre where Lachlan goes twice a week, and has the opportunity to spend time with children his own age.
