Supersized sculpture lobs into Nambour

An enormous 35-tonne sculpture has landed in Nambour. It’s the new centrepiece of the District Skate Park and Youth Activity Precinct that is currently being constructed on the corner of Matthew and Ann Streets.

Division 10 Councillor Greg Rogerson said the massive manufactured monument comprises of elements from the old Moreton Sugar Mill in Nambour. “This sculpture is a giant set of cogs and gears and represents a proud piece of Nambour’s history so it will add a very special element to this youth activity precinct,” he said.  “I’d like to thank local Sunshine Coast residents Michael Foley and Rod Forrester for buying this great centrepiece from Bundaberg Sugar for this community facility and all the workers who carried out the difficult task of lowering the sculpture into place today.”Mr Forrester said they were pleased to help contribute towards this theme of remembering the history of Nambour by donating some industrial relics from the old Moreton Sugar Mill, which were components of the crusher. “Michael and I got together around 10 to 12 years ago trying to find an opportunity to show off these gears we managed to save and keep here as a part of Nambour and the Sunshine Coast’s heritage,” Mr Forrester said.Cr Rogerson said the District Skate Park and Youth Activity Precinct would provide another recreational focal point for Nambour. “This is going to be a very exciting development for the entire community,” he said.   “The vision for the Nambour district skate park and youth activity precinct is a place that showcases Nambour’s rich history, provides varied landscapes and leisure experiences and celebrates our progressive culture and people,” he said.Stage one works are underway and include construction of the urban skate plaza, tree planting and landscaping. This will take around 22 weeks to complete, weather permitting.  The war memorial ‘Heroes Walk’ will be part of stage two works and will be finished in time for next year’s 100 year ANZAC celebrations.
