From six to sixty: Palmwoods local celebrates 50-season NYU milestone with championship victory
The Nambour Yandina United soccer club Over 35s Division 2 men’s team went through to win the Grand Final against Baringa FC last Friday, September 11. The team headed into the match at Coolum as a heavily motivated semi-final rematch, and secured the 2026 championship title.
The win was a huge achievement for the team and the entire Club, and none more so than for Palmwood’s Michael Harth, who this year celebrates his 50th consecutive season playing for NYU.
“I started playing for the NYU soccer club when I was 6 years old,” Michael said.
“And over the years, I have never contemplated playing for any other team.”
Michael was born at Nambour Hospital, and completed his schooling at Burnside.
“My parents Peter and Jenny were always heavily involved in the Club and had been involved on the committee for many years, the club was like our second home,” said Michael.
“They were always there helping out with working bees and fundraisers, and it was a big part of our lives.”
Michael went through the ranks, playing every year, right through to now. Over the years he has played in the same team with his three brothers, and has played with his two sons in a couple of friendly matches.
“A lot of people remained with the Club but stopped playing once they went away to uni or had families, and some have now returned after some time away,” he said.
“Our two sons have played with the NYU Club and our grandchildren and son in-law and daughter in-law have all played for NYU. It has come full circle for us.”
As well as playing, Michael has also previously coached junior teams.
“I just love the team environment, the exercise and the mateship involved with the Club,” said Michael.
“There are people in our Club that I have been friends with my whole life. It has a fantastic family friendly atmosphere, a great stadium and the playing fields are of a very high standard.
“It’s also a great way to get out of the house and stay fit. It is a terrific place for families with children of all ages to be and I have loved every minute of being a part of it.”
Michael Harth with three of his grandchildren “our family’s history with NYU has come full circle.”
