Gallery: Bill finds his voice as Restoring Hope celebrates six years

For Bill Van Heel, the difference Restoring Hope Parkinson’s Therapy has made can be summed up with a joke that carries a powerful message: his family and friends can “hear” him again.

The retired sales representative shared his story at the charity’s 2026 Fundraising Celebration at The Barn on Flaxton on September 13, telling supporters how Parkinson’s had affected his ability to communicate.

“Parkinson's made all of my friends and family deaf. They couldn't hear me!” Bill said. “Then, last year I received the help from the wonderful ladies at Restoring Hope Parkinson's and the Speak Out program. I now speak with intent, clarity and commitment ... and my family and friends have regained their hearing!”

The annual celebration, now in its sixth year, raises funds to help Restoring Hope provide evidence-based speech therapy and ongoing support for people living with Parkinson’s.

Company Secretary Alison Donaldson told guests the small charity had “BIG dreams”, including expanding services from its new Community Hub.

“We dream of removing financial barriers to access our services. We have offered our weekly groups, as part of our ongoing maintenance programs, without charge since August 2020,” she said. “Fundraisers like today and generous donors have made this possible.”

Ms Donaldson said the charity hoped to expand its volunteer team, services for people impacted by Parkinson’s and its financial support from the community.

Three of the much-loved Benevolent Bear Collection of 2026, Mr Darcy, Antoinette and Naomi, created by Lorraine Dippelsmann, were auctioned as part of the celebration. Lorraine has created a Benevolent Bear Collection each year since the charity was launched. These bears have been growing in reputation and popularity after being featured in the international magazine Teddy Bear Times & Friends. 

Founding Director Louise Williams thanked The Barn on Flaxton for continuing to host the event for the sixth year at no charge and the Blackall Range Lions Club for its ongoing support in organising and volunteering at the event.

The charity is encouraging supporters to consider regular donations, Containers for Change contributions and legacy giving.
