Retiring to the stars: Maleny drama group inspired by Planet 9

It seems unlikely—a link between amateur theatre as a rewarding activity in retirement, and the science of the stars.

Yet a group of Maleny Players—writers, actors, directors, and musicians—is finding inspiration from the intriguing new ‘Planet 9’, located on the other side of the Sun, to explore drama improvisation through a collaboration of art forms.

Club 88, a subgroup of Maleny Players formed in 2023 by three 87-year-olds and younger theatre enthusiasts, has already produced two popular shows, Stages and Changes, exploring humour and emotions throughout human lifetimes.

Under the new title Planet 9, the group is now exploring Earth as a rich environment set within the mystery of multiple universes and trillions of stars.

They have found the elements that make up our planet are a rich source of drama, alongside the complexities of human life and relationships.

Workshops at the Playhouse see dramatic dialogue, poetry, and music combined in imaginative dramatic expression.

“Drama improvisation seems to keep everyone young,” said organiser Jill Morris.

The group meets on the first Thursday of each month from 10am–12 noon, with a shared morning tea.

Next meeting: Thursday, 7 August at the Playhouse, Maleny Showgrounds. Interested? Contact Jill Morris on 0427 624 090.
