Health Feature: Walk, raise hope and make a difference

Operations Director Rory Cullinan said the walk is more than just a fundraiser. “This is a movement of solidarity and shared purpose.”

A sea of supporters will take to the athletics track at the University of the Sunshine Coast on Sunday July 13 for Step Out for Parkinson’s  — a major fundraising event that’s walking the talk for people living with Parkinson’s on the Sunshine Coast.

The annual event, now in its fourth year, raises funds for the Parkinson’s Support Fund™, a local initiative launched by The Parkinson’s Centre®  at Forest Glen — affectionately known as The Park. The Parkinson’s Support Fund™ helps people with Parkinson’s and their carers access essential services during times of financial stress or while awaiting government support.

More than a walk. It’s a movement.

Operations Director Rory Cullinan said the walk is more than just a fundraiser. “This is a movement of solidarity and shared purpose,” he said. “It’s about standing alongside people with Parkinson’s and saying: we see you, we support you, and we’re walking this journey with you.”

Generations walk the track in solidarity with people living with Parkinson’s — a fun-filled, uplifting morning that brings the community together. With live music, raffles, prizes, the crowd-favourite ‘Unshakeable Challenge’, and family-friendly activities, the event creates a festive atmosphere and a powerful sense of connection.

“This is a locals-helping-locals event,” Mr Cullinan said. “The money raised stays right here on the Sunshine Coast and goes directly to those doing it tough.”

In 2025, the goal is to raise $50,000. Since launching, the event has raised over $90,000 and supported everything from speech therapy programs to respite services and the landmark Parkinson’s Conference.

“It’s about making a tangible difference — one step, one family, one service at a time,” Mr Cullinan said.

Step Out for Parkinson’s is on Sunday July 13, 8am –  12pm at USC Athletics Track, Sippy Downs. Register or donate via www.theparkinsonscentre.com.au | 07 5408 4387. The Parkinson’s Centre is at 354 Mons Road, Forest Glen.
