Women’s football kicks goals at Yandina
Nambour Yandina United Football Club is celebrating a milestone year for women’s football, with the club fielding its biggest-ever line-up of women’s and girls’ teams in its 52-year history.
The club has four senior women’s teams, four junior girls’ teams and an U10/11 MiniRoo girls team this season, marking what NYUFC social media coordinator Hayden Staite described as “an incredible achievement for the club”.
The growing strength of the women’s program was on show on Friday night, May 8, when the club’s four women’s teams took to the field during Female Football Week celebrations at the North Street, Yandina grounds.
Mr Staite said the club was excited to see so many women and girls pulling on the NYU colours.
“This year we have had the most women and girls teams ever at NYU,” he said.
The milestone reflects the continued rise of women’s sport across the Sunshine Coast and the growing opportunities for girls to play football locally from a young age through to senior competition.
For a club that has been part of the local sporting landscape for more than five decades, the achievement is another sign of how community football continues to evolve, with more families, players and supporters getting behind the women’s game.
